Herbert Light was a student of David Madison, former assistant concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra, and later studied with Jani Szanto at the Philadelphia Musical Academy. Mr. Light was a member of the Baltimore Symphony and served in the United States Army Band in Washington D.C. before joining The Philadelphia Orchestra in 1960.
Mr. Light has performed as a soloist and recitalist, as well as in chamber music concerts with such artists as Emanuel Ax, Yefim Bronfman, Dennis Russell Davies, Barry Douglas, and Jeffrey Siegel. He was a member of the Amerita Chamber Players and was a founding member of the New Philadelphia Quartet, which performed on four continents. He was a founder and music advisor of the Music Society of Southern New Jersey and created the Ensemble Series at the Croft Farm in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, where he also served as music advisor. For a portion of the 1989 season he served as acting concertmaster of the Saint Louis Symphony at the invitation of its music director, Leonard Slatkin.
Mr. Light is married to pianist Yoheved Kaplinsky, chair of the piano department and artistic advisor of the Pre-College Division at the Juilliard School in New York. They have three children and two grandchildren.
