Philadelphia Orchestra Commissions Micro-Festival: Hear Tomorrow’s Masterpieces Today

If you’re a fan of new music, you probably already have your tickets for the upcoming Philadelphia Orchestra Commissions Micro-Festival premiering several concertos commissioned specifically for Philadelphia Orchestra principal musicians. If you don’t have tickets (or maybe you tuned out at those very words “new music”), please read on. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin wants to change your mind. “I hope our audiences will learn … not to be too scared anymore about it!” he laughs.

Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos: 150 Concerts in Philadelphia and Counting

A fierce, paralyzing snowstorm blanketed the East Coast between February 8 and 10, 1969. It left approximately 6,000 travelers stranded at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York.  More than 90 deaths were attributed to the storm.

Stuck in Montreal was Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, scheduled to make his conducting debut with The Philadelphia Orchestra on Friday afternoon, February 14.

Philadelphia Orchestra Pops Up

Neither snow, nor rain, or a strike by stagehands can keep the musicians of The Philadelphia Orchestra from playing.

Originally scheduled to perform at Carnegie Hall’s Opening Night concert on Wednesday, October 2, the Orchestra and Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin “popped up” in an unscheduled appearance at the Kimmel Center’s Verizon Hall.

And more than 2,200 area residents popped into the Kimmel Center for a freewheeling and free concert.

Sawallisch Honored in WHYY Special, October 8

The Orchestra has joined with partner WHYY-TV on a special production, Sawallisch: The Philadelphia Orchestra Tribute, honoring late Music Director Wolfgang Sawallisch, who led the acclaimed ensemble from 1993 to 2003. This one-hour program airs Tuesday, October 8, at 8:00 PM during WHYY-TV’s Fall Arts premiere week.

Longtime Philadelphia Orchestra subscriber Dr. Louis Keeler had recently switched his series from Thursday evenings to Friday afternoons and was enjoying a matinee performance of Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 (“It was a great performance that day,” he remembers) when he observed something troubling: He didn’t see any young people in the audience.
