Rattle Returns

Simon Rattle - Conductor

Brahms - Symphony No. 3

Webern - Six Pieces for Orchestra

Schumann - Symphony No. 3 ("Rhenish")

Saturday, April 28, 2012

8:00 pm Verizon Hall

Simon Rattle, in a rare US guest-conducting appearance, leads the sweeping and expressive third symphonies of both Brahms and Schumann. These create an ideal framework for the revolutionary style of Webern's hyper-romantic Six Pieces for Orchestra. Rattle and Philadelphia, a partnership not to be missed.

The Philadelphia Orchestra joins with Play On, Philly! (POP!), an El Sistema-inspired after-school music education program for underserved children founded by Curtis graduate Stanford Thompson. Guest conductor Simon Rattle, a strong supporter of music education and community engagement efforts, will conduct a Play On, Philly! ensemble at the beginning of the Orchestra’s scheduled evening concert on April 28, giving these young musicians the experience of performing on the Verizon Hall stage. The ensemble will perform five minutes of brief selections at the beginning of the concert, after which the regular subscription concert will begin with Brahms’s Symphony No. 3.
