Description:

Charles Dutoit and favorite piano soloist Martha Argerich start the season with a program of early-20th-century brilliance. Balanced between Russian exoticism and French elegance are four composers with a spirited panoply of sounds both fresh and nostalgic. Two fiery first concertos, created by brash young composer-pianists, winningly challenge ideas of concerto norms (Shostakovich's features an anti-hero solo trumpet, performed here by Principal Trumpet David Bilger). The concert ends with musical art--Ravel's ravishingly beautiful orchestration of Musorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, a masterful homage to a painter friend's creativity.
