Program:

Stravinsky - Dumbarton Oaks

Penderecki - Concerto grosso No. 1, for three cellos and orchestra

Sibelius - Symphony No. 1

Description:

A program of changing musical times and transitions. The concert begins with Stravinsky's fresh look at Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, here rendered into a modern view of Baroque music at work--commissioned for a patrons' wedding anniversary. Next comes a pleasingly lyrical new work, for three cello soloists and orchestra, by Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki, whose is celebrating his 75th birthday in 2008. The concert closes with Sibelius's volatile First Symphony, full of melody and driving rhythm.
