Description:

Maestro Dutoit welcomes American soprano Shana Blake Hill for her Philadelphia Orchestra subscription debut in The Phoenix, a work that Chinese-American composer Bright Sheng based on a Hans Christian Andersen tale. Also making his Orchestra subscription debut is Moscow-born pianist Nikolaï Lugansky, silver medalist at the 1994 Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, performing Rachmaninoff's tightrope-walk of a Third Concerto. The program opens with Mozart's magnificent E-flat-major Symphony, No. 39 of 1788, one of a mighty final triptych of works in the form representing the summation of the composer's symphonic art.
