Program:

BERLIOZ - Roman Carnival Overture

COPLAND - Lincoln Portrait

SAINT-SAËNS - Symphony No. 3 ("Organ")

Description:

One of Hollywood's most richly textured voices meets Aaron Copland's tribute to Abraham Lincoln, as actor Alec Baldwin joins a venerable line of celebrities who have narrated this 1942 piece--from Katharine Hepburn to Barack Obama, Gregory Peck to Carl Sandburg. The concert begins with Hector Berlioz's shimmering Roman Carnival Overture, consisting of festive music drawn from Berlioz's opera Benvenuto Cellini. Maestro Charles Dutoit caps this season-opener with another French milestone, Saint-Saëns's concerto-like "Organ" Symphony, featuring Verizon Hall's Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ.

Listen to Charles Dutoit discuss this concert with WRTI’s Jim Cotter.
