Dust Off Those Cellos: It's Time to Play with The Philadelphia Orchestra!
Free Cello Play-In, December 15, Welcomes Cellists of All Ages and Stages to Play with the Professionals
(Philadelphia, November 28, 2012)—Have you always wanted to play with The Philadelphia Orchestra? Now is your chance! The Orchestra invites cellists of all ages and abilities to participate in a free cello play-in at the Kimmel Center on Saturday, December 15, at 6:30 PM. Commonwealth Plaza will echo with the sounds of numerous cellos, as members of the community gather with cello players from the world-renowned Philadelphia Orchestra in this free, hour-long community event. Guest conductor Gianandrea Noseda and cellist Alisa Weilerstein, both of whom will be featured in the evening’s subscription concert, will also make an appearance.
Feeling a little rusty? Not to worry. The play-in is geared toward players of all levels—whether you’re just picking up a bow or are a seasoned professional. Musical selections will be just as varied, with everything from Bach to the Beatles, beloved holiday music, and well-known favorites such as “Auld Lang Syne.” Four parts will be provided according to the following suggested playing levels: advanced/professional (Cello 1), intermediate/advanced (Cello 2), intermediate (Cello 3), and beginner (Cello 4). Simply visit www.philorch.org/cello, pick your level, download and print the music, practice your part, and get ready to play! Registration does not guarantee seating so be sure to arrive early with a rockstop and folding music stand in hand. The public is also welcome to attend and enjoy the strains of music echoing through the Kimmel Center. Be sure to arrive before 6:30 for the best possible view!
Cellist Gloria de Pasquale, Orton P. and Noël S. Jackson Chair for The Philadelphia Orchestra and chair of the Education Committee, comments, “I can’t think of a more fun-filled way to bring the community together around the holidays. This event is such a wonderful opportunity to connect and engage with fellow cellists, no matter their ability. It is such a unique musical and social experience for performers and listeners alike, and I can’t wait to see who joins us for this unforgettable evening.”
Tickets are still available to The Philadelphia Orchestra’s concert immediately following the event, featuring soloist Alisa Weilerstein performing the Elgar Cello Concerto with Gianandrea Noseda conducting. Register now and receive a 20% discount on up to four tickets to attend this subscription concert on December 15 at 8:00 PM.
