The Philadelphia Orchestra’s Sunday Afternoon Chamber Concert Series launches October 28
Six intimate concerts highlight musical personalities, virtuosic playing
(Philadelphia, October 15, 2012)—Join a diverse cast of Orchestra musicians in Perelman Theater at 3:00 PM on Sunday, October 28, for the first of six chamber concerts taking place throughout the 2012-13 season that highlight musical personalities and virtuosic playing in an intimate setting. This inaugural chamber concert features violinists Paul Arnold and William Polk, Principal Second Violin Kimberly Fisher, Principal Viola Choong-Jin Chang, Assistant Principal Viola Kerri Ryan, violist Marvin Moon, Acting Associate Principal Cello Yumi Kendall, Acting Assistant Principal Cello John Koen, and guest pianist Cynthia Raim. Concertgoers will enjoy three significant works for chamber ensembles: Mozart’s masterful Duo No. 1 in G major, for violin and viola; Dvořák’s String Quintet in E-flat major, a piece that channels Eastern-European folk traditions alongside a spirited American directness; and Brahms’s Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, a passionate and lyrical composition written when the composer was still in his 20s. Additional chamber performances are set to take place on November 18, January 13, February 17, April 14, and May 12. All concerts begin at 3:00 PM in Perelman Theater.
The Chamber Concert Series provides concertgoers with unparalleled opportunities to enjoy programs specially curated by Orchestra musicians and special guests, featuring works that span the full range of classical music throughout history. Each chamber concert explores repertoire by such Classical masters as Mozart and Beethoven, Romantic giants Debussy and Brahms, and contemporary composers Milhaud and Steve Reich, all the while highlighting the virtuosic and distinct playing styles that define the musical personalities of individual Orchestra musicians. Chamber Concert Series seats start at $22. For more information or to purchase tickets call 215.893.1999 or visit www.philorch.org.
The Philadelphia Orchestra
Renowned for its distinctive sound, beloved for its keen ability to capture the hearts and imaginations of audiences, and admired for an unrivaled legacy of “firsts” in music-making, The Philadelphia Orchestra is one of the preeminent orchestras in the world.
The Philadelphia Orchestra has cultivated an extraordinary history of artistic leaders in its 112 seasons, including music directors Fritz Scheel, Carl Pohlig, Leopold Stokowski, Eugene Ormandy, Riccardo Muti, Wolfgang Sawallisch, and Christoph Eschenbach, and Charles Dutoit, who served as chief conductor from 2008 to 2012. With the 2012-13 season, Yannick Nézet-Séguin becomes the eighth music director of The Philadelphia Orchestra. Named music director designate in 2010, Nézet-Séguin brings a vision that extends beyond symphonic music into the vivid world of opera and choral music.
Philadelphia is home and the Orchestra nurtures an important relationship not only with patrons who support the main season at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts but also those who enjoy the Orchestra’s other area performances at the Mann Center, Penn’s Landing, and other venues. The Philadelphia Orchestra Association also continues to own the Academy of Music—a National Historic Landmark—as it has since 1957.
Through concerts, tours, residencies, presentations, and recordings, the Orchestra is a global ambassador for Philadelphia and for the United States. Having been the first American orchestra to perform in China, in 1973
at the request of President Nixon, today The Philadelphia Orchestra boasts a new partnership with the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing. The Orchestra annually performs at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center while also enjoying a three-week residency in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and a strong partnership with the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival.
The ensemble maintains an important Philadelphia tradition of presenting educational programs for students of all ages. Today the Orchestra executes myriad of education and community partnership programs serving over 45,000 annually, including its Neighborhood Concert Series, Sound All Around and Family Concerts, and eZseatU.
