School Partnership Program

School Partnerships

In September 2005, The Philadelphia Orchestra introduced its School Partnership Program (SPP), establishing ongoing, in-depth relationships with five partnering schools in the Philadelphia region. At each school, teaching artists work side-by-side with classroom teachers to cultivate each student’s knowledge and understanding of orchestral music through creative and interactive learning.

Through their participation in SPP, students:

  • Learn about musical instruments, composition and improvisation, musical concepts, and musical genres
  • Use music as a means to better understand themselves and the world around them
  • Are empowered through the exploration of their own creativity
  • Hone their perceptive, collaborative, and creative skills

The School Partnership Program offers students incomparable exposure and access to The Philadelphia Orchestra and its musicians. Learning opportunities for students in SPP include attendance at a School Concert, visits from Orchestra musicians, and participation in cross-cultural programs that explore how music connects people of diverse backgrounds.

Major funding for the School Partnership Program is provided by the Annenberg Foundation, the Dorothy V. Cassard Fund at the Philadelphia Foundation, GlaxoSmithKline, the Hamilton Family Foundation, Lincoln Financial Foundation, the Loeb Student Education Fund, the McLean Contributionship, the Presser Foundation, the Rosenlund Family Foundation, Christa and Calvin Schmidt, the Target Corporation, the Verizon Foundation, and the Wells Fargo Foundation.
