Philadelphia Orchestra Association announces new Board members

The Philadelphia Orchestra Association elected 12 new members to its Board of Directors at its Annual Meeting on September 27, 2005 . In addition to the newly elected Board members, 10 directors were reelected for three-year terms. The Association also elected a new slate of officers.
Twelve area business and community leaders join the Board for the first time: Sheldon M. Bonovitz , chairman and chief executive officer of Duane Morris LLP, of Philadelphia; David R. Brennan, president and chief executive officer of AstraZeneca LP, of Wayne, PA; Frederick R. Haas , vice chairman and secretary of the William Penn Foundation, of Philadelphia; Robert J. Hall, senior vice president and Philadelphia complex manager of UBS Financial Services, of Haverford, PA; Patricia H. Imbesi , a p artner of Harron Capital LP, of Ocean City, NJ; Berton E. Korman , chairman of the Board of the Korman Residential Properties, Inc., of Fort Washington, PA; John H. McFadden, a partner of McFadden, Pilkington & Ward LLP, of Philadelphia; Hilarie L. Morgan , psychologist, of Bryn Mawr, PA; Derek N. Pew, chairman, founder, and director of Boathouse Communications Partners, LLC, of Philadelphia; Robert Pollack, retired (formerly president of Colonial Penn Insurance Company), of Bryn Mawr; Joseph T. Sebastianelli, president and CEO of Jefferson Health System, of Haverford; and Archbold van Beuren, president of Campbell Away from Home, of Bryn Mawr.
The following 10 directors were reelected for three-year terms. They are Peter Dachowski of Berwyn, PA; David Ford of New York, NY; H. Edward Hanway of Media, PA; James Hovey of Wyndmoor, PA; Kenneth Lawrence of Rosemont, PA; Joanna Lewis of Ardmore, PA; Joseph McLaughlin of Media, PA; Jeffrey Orleans of Bryn Mawr, PA; David Rubenstein of Haverford, PA; a nd Elise du Pont of Rockland, DE.
Board member Harold A. Sorgenti recognized the work of retiring directors Jon Boscia, L. Patrick Gage, Susan Kim, Sandra Marshall, John Park, Ruthanne Schlarbaum, and Constance Smukler. Each received an engraved crystal sculpture in appreciation for their service. Also rotating off the Board are Frederick W. Kyle, Mary Belle Rauch, and Ronald Rubin.
Seven individuals from Encore Services, Inc., presenter of Peter Nero and the Philly Pops®, joined the Orchestra’s ex-officio members: D. Walter Cohen of Philadelphia, PA; Joseph Frick of Newtown Square, PA; the Honorable Vincent J. Fumo of Philadelphia, PA; Peter Nero of Media, PA; Mitchell Rubin of Philadelphia, PA; Samuel Savitz of Bala Cynwyd, PA; and Richard Sprague of Haverford, PA.

Newly elected members of the Board of Directors
- Sheldon M. Bonovitz is chairman and chief executive officer of Duane Morris LLP. He practices in the areas of federal income taxation and corporate law, with particular emphasis on mergers and acquisitions. He has written numerous articles on corporate tax, lectured at various tax institutes throughout the country, and taught advanced courses in taxation at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Mr. Bonovitz serves on the boards of directors of Comcast Corporation and eResearch Technology, Inc. He is a trustee of the Dolfinger-McMahon Foundation and the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation. In addition, he serves on the boards of the Barnes Foundation, the Curtis Institute of Music, the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Mr. Bonovitz received his undergraduate degree in Finance and Commerce from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and a JD degree from Harvard Law School. He resides in Philadelphia.
- David R. Brennan is president and chief executive officer of AstraZeneca LP and an executive member of the Board of Directors. Recently, he was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of AstraZeneca P.L.C., and will oversee the company’s worldwide operations beginning January 1, 2006. Mr. Brennan began his career in 1975 at Merck, where he rose from sales representative in the U.S. Division to general manager of Chibret International. Mr. Brennan joined AstraMerck in 1992 and helped to build the joint venture into a multi-billion dollar business in the U.S. At the time of the AstraZeneca merger, he took responsibility for all commercial, licensing, strategy, and planning activities for AstraZeneca LP. Mr. Brennan serves on the Executive Board of Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, is chairman of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Heart Association, and a Board member of the CEO Roundtable on Cancer. He received his BA in Business Administration from Gettysburg College, and lives in Wayne , PA.
- Frederick R. Haas , of Philadelphia, is vice chairman and secretary of the William Penn Foundation. His grandfather, Otto, co-founder of Rohm and Haas Company, established the Foundation with his wife, Phoebe, in 1945. The Foundation strives to improve the quality of life in the Philadelphia region through efforts that foster rich cultural expression, strengthen children’s futures, and deepen connections to nature and community. In partnership with others, the Foundation works to advance a vital, just, and caring community. Mr. Haas serves as vice chair of the Board of Trustees of the Resenbach Museum and Library and is on the Honorary Committee of MANNA. He also serves as chairman of the Kimmel Center Organ Committee.
- Robert J. Hall is senior vice president and Philadelphia complex manager of UBS Financial Services. Mr. Hall began his career in the securities industry as a broker trainee with Kidder, Peabody in Chicago and developed a successful advisory practice and became vice president in 1985. After several leadership roles in other locations, he was relocated to manage Kidder, Peabody’s Philadelphia office. Shortly thereafter, Kidder, Peabody was sold to PaineWebber, and in turn, PaineWebber was acquired by UBS. Mr. Hall manages the UBS office in Philadelphia as well as oversees its suburban branches. Mr. Hall is also an arbitrator of NASD and a member of the Philadelphia Securities Association. He serves on the Corporate Advisory Board of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Mr. Hall received his Bachelor’s degree from Denison University. He resides in Haverford, PA.
- Patricia H. Imbesi i s a partner of Harron Capital LP. Her father, the late Paul Harron, Sr., founded and ran Harron Communications Corp., which was sold to Adelphia Communications in 1999. Ms. Imbesi serves on the boards of Drexel University and St. Augustine College Preparatory School. She is chairman of the Parents’ Committee of Villanova University. Patricia and her husband are trustees of the John & Patricia Imbesi Foundation. They live in Ocean City, NJ.
- Berton E. Korman is chairman of the Board of the Korman Residential Properties, Inc. Mr. Korman’s grandfather, Hyman Korman, along with his two sons founded the company in 1919. The Korman Company began as a family real estate development firm and has evolved into a fully integrated, multi-divisional investment, management, and development organization. Mr. Korman is a trustee of the Hyman Korman Family Foundation, and he serves on the boards of many cultural, community and civic organizations, including Germantown Academy, Albert Einstein Healthcare Network, the PENJERDEL Council, the Society of the Four Arts, and Jupiter Performing Arts Center. He is also vice chair of the Board of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and trustee-fellow of the Philadelphia College of Physicians. Mr. Korman earned his BA in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. He lives in Fort Washington, PA.
- John H. McFadden is a partner of McFadden, Pilkington & Ward LLP. Mr. McFadden practices in the areas of charities law, corporate law, financial services, investments, and property law. He began his legal career as an attorney in Sidley & Austin in London in 1978. He joined Wald, Harkrader & Ross in London and then joined Pepper, Hamilton & Scheetz in London as a partner. Mr. McFadden serves on the boards of the Easton Coach Company and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He is a charter member of the Barnes Society, the International Advisory Council for the Harvard Aids Institute, and the Kimmel Center Organ Committee. Mr. McFadden received a BA degree from Harvard University, an MBA from Columbia University, and a JD from Fordham University. He is an honorary fellow of the Royal Academy of Music. His wife, Lisa D. Kabnick, is head of financial transactions with Reed Smith LLP in Philadelphia. They live in Philadelphia.
- Hilarie L. Morgan , of Bryn Mawr, is a psychologist, specializing in individual treatment of adolescents and adults. She worked in private practice from 1988 to 1997, focusing on interpersonal relationships, eating disorders, and identity issues. Starting in 1983, Ms. Morgan conducted individual, family, and group outpatient psychotherapy for children at Northeast Community Center for Mental Health. She serves on the Board of Philadelphia Hospitality, Inc. Her husband, Mr. Mitchell L. Morgan, is CEO and founder of Morgan Properties. Ms. Morgan is a trustee of the Mitchell and Hilarie Morgan Family Foundation. She received her BA in psychology with distinction from Boston University, a MA in counseling psychology from New York University, and a Ph.D. in counseling and professional psychology from the University of Pennsylvania.
- Derek N. Pew is chairman and founder of Boathouse Communications Partners, LLC, and has served as a director since its inception. Mr. Pew began his career as an investment banker with Bankers Trust Company and, thereafter, as an attorney with Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP. As an investment banker and lawyer, Mr. Pew participated in over $70 billion in transactions including the merger of Bell Atlantic and NYNEX. Prior to founding Boathouse Communications Partners, Mr. Pew was president of the Furst Group, Inc. He serves on the Board of Wireless Philadelphia, and is a trustee of the Wendy & Derek Pew Foundation, Inc. He is an advisory Board member of the Metropolitan AIDS Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance of Pennsylvania and of the Greene Towne School, and is a member of several charitable committees for Philadelphia organizations including the Philadelphia Art Alliance and the Philadelphia Zoo. Mr. Pew received a BA with distinction in economics from Dartmouth College and a JD from the University of Pennsylvania. He lives in Philadelphia.
- Robert Pollack was a successful financial advisor for years after serving as president of Colonial Penn Insurance Company. Mr. Pollack started his career in the insurance field in 1956 as an actuarial assistant at American Mutual Insurance Cos. in Boston. He ran Colonial Penn Insurance Company for 10 years, and then began his own company, R. Pollack Inc. In 1982, Mr. Pollack opened Robert Pollack Investment Advisor, where he worked until he retired. Mr. Pollack serves on the Chairman’s Council of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He lives in Bryn Mawr, PA, and is a member of the Bryn Mawr Mainliners and the Temple Beth Hillel/Beth El. Mr. Pollack earned his BS degree in mathematics from the University of Massachusetts and served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956.
- Joseph T. Sebastianelli is president and CEO of Jefferson Health System. Mr. Sebastianelli’s career of 35 years has been in the health care and insurance industries and the legal profession. He began his career specializing in health insurance litigation at Morgan, Lewis and Bockius. Later on, he held management positions at Blue Cross of Greater Philadelphia. He joined Blue Bell-based U.S. Healthcare in 1994 and was serving as Co-President when the company was acquired by Aetna. Soon after, Mr. Sebastianelli was named president of Aetna, a position he held until 1997. In 2000, Mr. Sebastianelli was appointed chairman, CEO, and president of onehealthbank.com, which merged with RealMed Corporation the next year. Mr. Sebastianelli served as chairman and CEO of RealMed Corp. until he joined Jefferson Health System. He received a BS degree from the University of Scranton and a JD from the Villanova University School of Law. He resides in Haverford, PA.
- Archbold van Beuren is president of Campbell Away from Home and Canada, Mexico, and Latin America. He joined Campbell Soup Company as assistant marketing manager of Swanson Frozen Foods in 1983. After holding various marketing positions in the company’s frozen foods unit, he became director of marketing of Swanson Frozen Foods. Mr. van Beuren held various management positions within Campbell’s through the 1990s. In 1996, he was named managing director of Campbell’s U.K. Grocery Division. Two years later, he became president of Godiva Chocolatier, and ran the company for six years. Mr. van Beuren is a director of the Van Beuren Charitable Foundation, Inc., in Rhode Island and serves on the Board of the Taft School. He received a BA degree in art history from Yale University and an MBA in finance and marketing from Columbia University. He lives in Bryn Mawr, PA.
