How to get started with podcasts

1. Select your podcast software
Your podcast software will search the web to find the latest episodes of the podcasts to which you subscribe and will automatically download new episodes to your computer.

This software is usually free:

2. Subscribe to a podcast
Once you have the software installed you can subscribe to a podcast. The process is different for each podcast application, but the instructions below will give you some idea of how it works:

If you have iTunes
You can use the iTunes Podcast Directory to subscribe to podcasts that are listed on iTunes. If the podcast you want is not listed in iTunes, you can follow the same instructions given below for Juice, Doppler, and other podcast software.

If you have Juice, Doppler, or other software
With this software, you will need to add the "RSS feed" of the podcast to your list of subscriptions. The RSS feed can look complicated in your web browser, but the most important part is the address of the podcast. Your podcast software will need this address to check for new episode updates.

On The Philadelphia Orchestra’s podcast page, you will find the feed address by clicking on the orange “Podcast” button under “Subscribe to Podchestra.” The feed address will appear in the address bar of your internet browser: http://podcast.philorch.org/feed.xml.

Copy this feed address and paste it into your podcast software. The exact procedure will depend on your podcast software, but look for buttons or links that say "Add," "Subscribe," or in iTunes go to the "Advanced" tab and click "Subscribe to Podcast."

3. Listening to your podcasts
Your podcast software will automatically download new episodes as they become available. For audio podcasts, you can listen to episodes on your computer or transfer them to your portable media player (iPod or other device) to listen to later. If you subscribe to video podcasts, the episodes should play on your computer but will only play on certain portable players and mobile phones.
