The Verdi Requiem

Yannick continues his multi-year exploration of the great requiems during the opening week of the season, anticipating the 2013 bicentennial of Giuseppe Verdi’s birth. Along with this epic Requiem, Yannick brings an international cast of remarkable vocal soloists to Philadelphia: soprano Marina Poplavskaya, mezzo-soprano Christine Rice, tenor Rolando Villazón, and bass Mikhail Petrenko. They join the Westminster Symphonic Choir in this stunning work that is sure to be a high point of the season.

100 Years of the Rite of Spring

It left the musical world changed forever and received its American premiere in Philadelphia by the legendary Leopold Stokowski. In partnership with Philadelphia Live Arts, and the New York-based Ridge Theater, Yannick conducts a 21st-century treatment of The Rite of Spring, a centenary celebration of Stravinsky's explosive masterpiece from 1913. Contemporary visual elements, dance, and design will be incorporated into one great work of art — in the spirit of Stokowski.

St. Matthew Passion and More

This season features the Orchestra in a performance of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion over Easter weekend in 2013, showcasing the spiritual power of music. Significantly, this will be the first time in 30 years the Orchestra will have performed the piece. Other beloved choral masterworks can be heard throughout the season with the Philadelphia Singers Chorale, including Prokofiev’s cinematic score to Alexander Nevsky performed live with Sergei Eisentein’s film, and a Valentine’s weekend performance of Orff’s Carmina burana.

Opening Night with Renée Fleming

Don’t miss the event of the season on October 18, 2012! Make plans now for a festive evening of music between two close musical collaborators—opera star Renée Fleming joins Yannick at his special invitation for his inaugural celebration. Join us for a toast as we welcome Yannick to Philadelphia!

Stokowski Centenary: A Vision, A Legacy

In 1912 Leopold Stokowski became the music director of The Philadelphia Orchestra. One hundred years later, Yannick steps into the wonderful tradition and heritage that Stokowski endowed upon the Orchestra. Throughout the season we will pay tribute to this legacy with programs that celebrate the very spirit of Stokowski by expanding the repertoire, welcoming collaborations with artistic partners, bringing visual aspects to our concerts, and performing works that he first introduced in Philadelphia.
