REVIEWS International Herald Tribune - The IHT Online Wednesday, May 26, 2004 David Stevens PARIS - The Philadelphia Orchestra passed through town on its European tour, establishing its formidable credentials with a concert at the Théâtre Mogador under Christoph Eschenbach, the music director it shares with the Orchestre de Paris. The concert included Beethoven's "Fidelio" overture, Messiaen's "Offrandes Oubliées" and a particularly spacious reading of Bruckner's Symphony No. 7. But more fun was another
concert that combined the talents of Eschenbach's two orchestras. Musicians
of the Paris orchestra, with Eschenbach at the piano, delivered Tobias
Picker's sextet "The Blue Hula," then members of the Philadelphia
under Eschenbach took on "Tactus," a work for 10 string and
wind players by Marc-André Dalbavie, the Paris orchestra's composer
in residence. The glorious finale, with a mixture of players from the
two orchestras, was Schubert's Octet in D. A convincing example of international
amity. |
