As the Orchestra traveled from Korea to China, David Patrick Stearns reflected on recent concerts in Tokyo and Seoul with a May 3 post on the Arts Watch blog.

David Patrick Stearns’s May 2 post on the Arts Watch blog describes the video installation at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts and briefly reviews the Orchestra’s second performance in Seoul. Stearns remarked that in the all-Stravinsky program “Dutoit showed how he is continuing to consolidate his own, lower-fat version of the Philadelphia sound - one that lends itself to great flexibility, not to mention subtle gradations in color that Dutoit employs with a highly purposeful sense of expression. He’s writing a new chapter in the orchestra’s artistic history.”

In his article about the Orchestra’s April 30 performance at Seoul’s Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, the Inquirer’s David Patrick Stearns describes Maestro Dutoit as the “concert’s star” and that “the minute he stepped on the podium to bow, the decibel level shot up.” According to Stearns, the “opening moments of Ravel's La Valse alone amply justified the audience's enthusiasm.”

Pianist Ivo Pogorelich has graciously agreed to appear as soloist with Chief Conductor Charles Dutoit and The Philadelphia Orchestra in their Suntory Hall concert on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, in Tokyo, Japan, as part of the Orchestra’s 2010 Tour of Asia. Martha Argerich, who was originally scheduled to perform Ravel’s Concerto in G major with Mr. Dutoit and the Orchestra, has regrettably withdrawn due to personal family reasons. Mr. Pogorelich will perform Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2. The remainder of the program, which includes Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture, Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, and Ravel’s La Valse, is unchanged. Read More (PDF).
