Chief Conductor Charles Dutoit leads The Philadelphia Orchestra’s Opening Night Concert featuring Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 (“Emperor”) with soloist Garrick Ohlsson, Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, and Ravel’s La Valse (July 10).
Renowned violinist Gil Shaham joins Mr. Dutoit and The Philadelphia Orchestra for a performance of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 completes the program (July 11).
Following her triumphant Philadelphia Orchestra debut in August 2008, 22-year-old rising star pianist Yuja Wang returns to perform Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Orchestra, led by Associate Conductor Rossen Milanov. The program also features Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol and Sibelius’s Symphony No. 1 (July 12).
Mr. Milanov leads the Orchestra in a program of works by iconic American composer George Gershwin. Pianist Anne-Marie McDermott, in her Philadelphia Orchestra debut, appears as soloist in Rhapsody in Blue and I Got Rhythm, variations for piano and orchestra. The concert also includes the composer’s An American in Paris and Porgy and Bess, A Symphonic Picture (July 15).
Miguel Harth-Bedoya leads a program of Spanish-themed works featuring Ravel’s Rapsodie espagnole and Bolero; Iturriaga’s Sinfonía Junín-Ayacucho; and Turina’s Danzas fantásticas (July 17).
Cellist Alisa Weilerstein joins The Philadelphia Orchestra in the final concert of its 2009 residency. She is soloist in Bloch’s Schelomo, on a program that also includes Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 and Christopher Theofanidis’s Rainbow Body (July 18).
