Open Position: General Manager, Academy of Music

The Academy of Music (AOM), built in 1857, is a national historic landmark, a cultural and architectural jewel in Philadelphia’s crown, and an iconic venue for the performing arts in our community and beyond for over a century. Home to the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1900 to 2001, the AOM is synonymous with the highest musical, artistic and civic values.  

The General Manager (GM), Academy of Music, is responsible both for the day-to-day and long- term strategic management of the Academy of Music, as an integral part of the operations of the Philadelphia Orchestra Association (POA). The GM serves as landlord for the AOM.

The AOM is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Philadelphia Orchestra Association, and is operated by a separate non-profit, the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts (KCI).  The GM is responsible for ensuring KCI meets its obligations in the Master Lease and is further responsible for determining and implementing the plan for the short- and long-term restoration and preservation needs of the Academy of Music. 

The GM will be an advocate for the AOM in the local, national and international community to help support understanding and knowledge of the building. This position will oversee the restoration and preservation of this national historic landmark building whose primary function is to serve as a venue for performing arts events and other community activities. The GM will work with the AOM Board of Trustees to ensure that the annual restoration and preservation plans for AOM align with broader strategic and fundraising plans of the POA. 

This position reports to the Executive Director of the POA—who also serves as Secretary of the AOM Board of Trustees—for functions including but not limited to serving as landlord to KCI, managing the capital projects for the AOM, and the budget and financial reporting. The GM will oversee large restoration and construction contracts, including on-site supervision and will have knowledge of historic building techniques as well as current standards and best practices in stewardship of historic buildings.

The GM will have a thorough understanding of any and all lease agreements between AOM and KCI as they relate to on-going and new projects. This position, as determined by the Executive Director and the Board Chair of the AOM, represents the AOM on all committees, task forces and other ad hoc initiatives for building maintenance and repair, restoration and preservation, and will work with the Executive Director of the POA and the Chief Financial Officer of the POA to have representation on committees responsible for the legal or financial accountability for the AOM.

Fundraising for AOM is managed by the POA Development Department. The GM will assist in these fundraising efforts, working closely with the POA’s Vice President, Development and assigned development staff to identify, qualify and solicit appropriate government, foundation, corporate and individual donors for AOM restoration support. The GM will also be involved in cultivation and stewardship efforts with major and prospective AOM donors.   

Essential Functions: 

  • Serve as landlord for the AOM building, working closely with the appropriate KCI personnel, including the KCI production manager for AOM and the KCI Vice President of Operations. 
  • Work closely with the POA President & CEO, Executive Director, CFO, VP of Development and AOM Board Chair to ensure timely and accurate reporting to the AOM Board of Trustees
  • Represent the AOM and projects to prospective funders as determined by the POA Development Department.

 Restoration and Preservation Oversight: 

  • Oversee the ongoing assessment of the AOM building regarding restoration and preservation; monitor maintenance and repairs to ensure the AOM is maintained according to national historic landmark standards and requirements of the Philadelphia Historical Commission and as a world class performing arts facility. Conduct historic preservation research and ensure compliance with best practices. 
  • Develop an annual capital plan and oversee capital projects and improvements, assuring they are compliant with all local and other codes and are planned and completed in a manner that conforms to historic preservation standards. Manage all aspects of the expense budget for the restoration and preservation of the building assuring compliance to forecast budget in collaboration with the POA Finance Office. 
  • Ensure that projects are being completed as bid, on budget and within the timelines and deadlines set. Serve as contract manager, assuring contracts are being carried out according to specifications. 
  • With dotted-line reporting to the Vice President, Development, collaborate on prospect identification, cultivation, proposal preparation, grant reporting, events and other responsibilities related to fundraising for restoration and capital projects. 
  • Represent the AOM on appropriate facility, governance and other committees and task forces related to maintenance and restoration of the building as determined by the Executive Director and the AOM Board Chair. Attend, support and participate in AOM Board and other committee meetings. 


Bachelor’s degree required, in construction management, architecture, historic preservation, or a related field.  A minimum of 5–7 years’ hands-on experience in historic preservation, restoration, or museum/historic site experience. Demonstrated success in managing capital projects and in working with boards of directors is highly preferred and critical to the success of the position.  A working knowledge of principles of plumbing, electrical, HVAC and building codes is preferred.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands: 

Some work is performed in an office environment and some is done in the field. The employee will be required to attend meetings/events during evening and weekend hours.
