2016 Asia, May 22: Shanghai

The Orchestra spent only one full day in Shanghai—and it was a busy one. Twenty-five musicians spent the morning in a 90-minute rehearsal for an afternoon side-by-side concert later that afternoon. Also that afternoon the Orchestra proudly signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Shanghai Media Group. That evening, the Philadelphians performed in the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.

2016 Asia, May 20: Hong Kong

The South China Morning Post's review of the Orchestra’s first performance at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre last evening was rapturous, saying the concert provided “non-stop magic under Nézet-Séguin. … Like a great Hong Kong milk tea, the beauty of orchestral sound comes from the complex depth and blend of flavours. The rich string legato is key but so are faultless brass, singing woodwinds and crisp percussion.” The review further stated, “precision, controlled power, beautiful pacing and perfect solos [were] on display in Brahms’s Symphony No.

2016 Asia, May 16-18: Newark-Hong Kong

Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Orchestra have embarked on their 2016 Tour of Asia & China Residency. After a slight delay at Newark International Airport, the Orchestra’s plane landed in Hong Kong and the weary travelers arrived at the hotel with only a little time to grab a bite to eat before heading to bed. While Wednesday, May 18, was a free day, there were a number of activities planned.

Yo-Yo Ma Joins the Orchestra for Concerts and a PlayIN

World famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma is a frequent guest and good friend of The Philadelphia Orchestra but his appearances last week were his first subscription performances in 20 years. He joined Principal Guest Conductor Stéphane Denève to kick off the Orchestra’s two-week celebration of the music of John Williams, performing the composer’s Cello Concerto, written specifically for him. Ma and Denève were also special guests at the Orchestra’s Cello PlayIN, where over 100 cellists from the Philadelphia region performed alongside Ma and the entire cello section of the ensemble.
