Jeffry Kirschen Horn
Each month in the Orchestra’s Playbill, we feature one musician in a question-and-answer segment. Below is that feature in its entirety.
Where were you born? I was born in Philadelphia and attended Northeast H.S., which is where I first heard The Philadelphia Orchestra when it came play a school concert in 1968.
What piece of music could you play over and over again? Choosing a favorite piece of music is very difficult because I have many favorites but I love playing and listening to the music from Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss. It is filled with beautiful melodies and lush harmonies.
Tell us about your instrument. My horn was made in London, England, by Paxman. I have been playing it for about 20 years. It is made of yellow brass.
When did you join the Orchestra? I have been a member of The Philadelphia Orchestra since September 1989, so this is my 25th year.
Do you have any hobbies? I love to play tennis and cook. And I’m building a consumer direct business marketing health and wellness products that are eco-friendly, very safe, and effective.
Other than Verizon Hall, where is your favorite place to perform? Besides Verizon Hall, my other favorite hall to perform in is the Musikverein in Vienna, Austria—lots of wood and history.
