In a capstone to our Leonard Bernstein centenary celebration, we present his quirky, complex, irreverent, and very humorous operetta Candide, with orchestral staging.
“… please borrow, steal and BEG BEG Bramwell Tovey to come back next year … what a treat….”
That’s what Orchestra Facebook fan John Samerjan wrote after Tovey led three Glorious Sound of Christmas concerts last year.
We heard the pleas, and Tovey, seen below conducting last year’s Christmas concert, gladly returns to conduct our New Year’s Eve concert, which begins at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, December 31.
“What I like to do on New Year’s Eve is have a good time,” said Tovey, the Grammy® and JUNO award-winning music director of the Vancouver Symphony. “I’m liable to be a bit more, shall I say, irreverent than at a usual concert. It will be an evening of delicious music and, hopefully, witty entertainment.
“As a conductor, I’ve worked with most of the major orchestras of the world and The Philadelphia Orchestra is one of the greatest. I love the way they respect the music on the program and their commitment to excellence.”
Tovey will lead a program that includes the timeless music of Johann Strauss Jr., soprano Tracy Dahl, and dancers from Dance Affiliates. The concert begins at 7:30 PM., leaving concertgoers plenty of time to continue with their festivities.
