Using the magic of music and theater, The Philadelphia Orchestra and Enchantment Theater Company bring you the legendary stories of our heroine Sheherazade and her tales of 1,001 Arabian nights.
He may not have the cachet or reputation of one of The Philadelphia Orchestra’s legendary conductors, but you have to admit, Santa Claus has a style all his own.
See for yourself when he takes the baton during the Orchestra’s Glorious Sound of Christmas concerts Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Tickets are still available for the popular concerts, which are named for the Orchestra’s best-selling Christmas album.
The concerts are a family tradition for many and feature the famed Philadelphia Sound in traditional and modern classics.
Conducting this year is Sarah Hicks, who made a smash debut with the Orchestra on New Year’s Eve in 2011.
“I’m preparing for these concerts just like any other—choosing repertoire, learning scores, meeting with the chorus and soloists—but there’s certainly a different spirit about holiday music that I particularly enjoy.” Hicks said. “And it gives me an excuse to break out the eggnog a little early in the season as I’m preparing my scores!”
The Orchestra is also preparing for two perennial holiday favorites, Messiah, on Sunday, December 22, and its New Year’s Eve concert with Bramwell Tovey, who made his debut in 2008.
One commentator wrote on the Orchestra’s Facebook page after a Glorious Sound of Christmas performance last year, led by Tovey,“This concert was one of the most fabulous concerts I have EVER been to—the conductor was amazing—loved his pieces and also his humor—what a show! Will definitely be making this a tradition!!!”
MusicalAmerica.com wrote that Tovey, the Grammy Award-winning conductor of the Vancouver Symphony, is “famed for his amusing, erudite, and delightfully irreverent remarks from the stage, he’s, as one critic put it, ‘… the witty bloke everybody wants to sit next to at the pub.’”
Tickets remain for the New Year’s concert at the pub … err, Kimmel Center, so pull up a seat and start the year of with some outstanding music and convivial company.
