These works reflect aspects each composer’s homeland, seen through the prism of music. Sibelius claimed the sight of magnificent swans in flight over his home inspired the glorious climax to his Fifth Symphony, while Bartók reached back to the roots of Hungarian folk music for parts of his Violin Concerto No. 2. Grieg’s atmospheric music for Peer Gynt, a legend-inspired play by Ibsen, is filled with the mists and magic of Norway’s past, including the ever-popular “In the Hall of the Mountain King.”
