“A symphony must be like the world,” Mahler said. “It must embrace everything.” The composer had a close association with The Philadelphia Orchestra: Leopold Stokowski and the Orchestra gave the U.S. premiere of Mahler’s Eighth Symphony (“Symphony of a Thousand”). Mahler’s Second, the “Resurrection” Symphony, is another major choral work, popular in his lifetime, grandly exploring the themes of life and death. Yannick conducts the ensemble along with the Westminster Symphonic Choir, British mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly, and Philadelphia’s Academy of Vocal Arts alumna soprano Angela Meade in this gripping and all-encompassing tour de force.
