Subtle connections and unexpected inspirations make for a fascinating evening. Johann Strauss Jr.’s “Tales from the Vienna Woods” waltz—with its delightful zither solo—is one of his most famous. Strauss was on HK Gruber’s mind in the deliciously animated orchestral rave-up Charivari. Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 is the most introspective of his five, while his tumultuous “Serioso” Quartet is performed in Mahler’s rarely heard orchestral arrangement.
