In 1973 The Philadelphia Orchestra became the first American orchestra to perform in the People’s Republic of China, at the invitation of President Richard Nixon, following his historic visit in 1972. Twenty years later, the Orchestra returned with Music Director Wolfgang Sawallisch, rekindling many of the friendships and acquaintances made on that first trip. For a celebratory concert in the Great Hall of the People, the Philadelphians performed virtuosic works by Schubert, Richard Strauss, and Dvořák.
The original concert at the Great Hall of the People was made possible through the support and partnership of CCTV and the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in New York.
