Wagner "Siegfried Idyll"
Bruckner Symphony No. 7

This week's Virtual Philadelphia Orchestra Watch, available starting Thursday at 8pm, includes a soaring performance of Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 conducted by Yannick during his inaugural 2012-13 season. Bruckner’s compositions are profoundly influenced by his devout Catholic beliefs. He wrote church music during his early years, and that tradition is pervasive in his instrumental works. His symphonies, which speak to a deep reverence for the natural world, are crafted in a monumental architectural style likened to cathedrals of sound. His orchestrations are at times reminiscent of thundering church organs and at other moments are full of tenderness and piety. This Seventh Symphony was met with immediate success in its 1884 Leipzig, Germany premiere and remains one of Bruckner’s preeminent masterworks.
