The Philadelphia Orchestra Expands Program Bringing the Healing Power of Music to Hospitals Nationwide

Posted on October 27, 2021

Free digital content now available in over 70 hospitals across the country

Programming includes Digital Stage concerts
and Our City, Your Orchestra community series

(Philadelphia, October 27, 2021)—To share the healing power of music, The Philadelphia Orchestra has expanded its pilot program in partnership with Penn Medicine to reach additional hospitals throughout the country, offering special access to digital performance content for free. In addition to Penn Medicine’s six-hospital network in Philadelphia, Chester County, Lancaster, and Princeton, NJ, the program is now available in more than 70 hospitals in the United States, including Jefferson Health—Abington, Einstein Medical Center, Moss Rehabilitation, Temple University Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital, Miami Cancer Center, Akron Children’s Hospital, Northeast Georgia Health System, and the 19-hospital system of Northwell Health Hospitals on Long Island, NY, among others.

Patients, including those being treated for COVID-19, have the ability to stream the Orchestra’s Digital Stage performances and the Our City, Your Orchestra community series directly in their rooms on a dedicated Philadelphia Orchestra channel, as well as on iPads. New programming is added each month. In certain hospitals working in collaboration with pCare, Orchestra content is made available to patients on demand through an interactive patient care system.

“We were deeply moved by the response to the pilot program with Penn Medicine, which started as a vital means of support and gratitude for healthcare heroes battling COVID-19, and for the patients under their care,” said Matías Tarnopolsky, president and CEO of The Philadelphia Orchestra and Kimmel Center, Inc. “That we can expand the program and share the gift of music with an even wider network, helps us do our part in sharing the joy and healing power of music.”

“Enhancing and expanding access to orchestral performances to more patients provides an additional layer of comfort and healing in hospitals throughout the country,” said Patrick J. Brennan, chief medical officer of the University of Pennsylvania Health System and a member of the Orchestra’s Board of Directors.

Eric Wignall, an ICU nurse at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, shared, “One night last December, every room in our unit was listening to The Philadelphia Orchestra’s performance of The Nutcracker, infusing the floor with the holiday spirit. It was great.”

“As we strive to live our mission every day with the patients in our hospitals, it is a blessing to have the amazing music of The Philadelphia Orchestra at our patients’ fingertips,” said Kelly Baumer, vice president of clinical operations at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital. “We have incorporated beautiful art and natural light in our new hospital design because we know that attention to these details assists the healing process. Now, we have been able to add beautiful music to our healing environment.”
