Musicians Behind the Scenes: Michael Franz

Posted by:  The Philadelphia Orchestra on January 03, 2023

Where were you born? I was born in Burlington, Vermont.

Tell us about your instrument. My bass was made around 1850 in the north of England by George Craske. In spite of the fact that he was the most prolific violin maker in history, with nearly 3,000 instruments to his name, Craske only made a small number of basses. Most of his basses were reduced in size over the years but mine is an exception, meaning it’s very large.

What piece of music never fails to move you? Schubert’s Piano Sonata No. 21 in B-flat major.

When did you join the Orchestra? Summer 2022.

Do you play any other instruments? I was a music education major in college, so I can play most instruments (at a 4th grade level!).

What books are on your nightstand? Hard copy or e-reader? Hard copy of All God’s Dangers: The Life of Nate Shaw by Theodore Rosengarten.
Do you speak any other languages? I’m slowly learning Spanish.

Do you have any hobbies? Hiking and collecting very old classical recordings.

Do you have a favorite movie? The Elephant Man.

When was the first time you heard The Philadelphia Orchestra? In 2015 at Carnegie Hall and I remember it like it was yesterday!

Other than Verizon Hall, where is your favorite place to perform? The Kultur- und Kongresszentrum Concert Hall in Lucerne, Switzerland, and Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa, California.
