Musicians Behind the Scenes: Daniel Han

Posted by:  The Philadelphia Orchestra on April 29, 2022

Where were you born? I was born in Lexington, Kentucky.

What piece of music could you play over and over again? Schubert’s String Quintet or “The Last Rose of Summer” by Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst. (Just kidding, I can’t play the Ernst.)

What’s your favorite Philadelphia restaurant? A Korean restaurant called DuBu in Elkins Park or Chick-fil-A in Springfield (the closest one to my house).

Tell us about your instrument. All I know is that it’s OLD, probably made in the 1680s. They’re still trying to figure out who made it.

What piece of music never fails to move you? Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 (“Resurrection”) or Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (“Choral”).

When did you join the Orchestra? In September 2006.

Do you play any other instruments? Not well.

What’s your favorite type of food? Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Italian, Mexican, American … I guess food from most countries, although I’m a very picky eater.

Do you speak any other languages? Broken Korean.

Do you have a favorite movie? The Lord of the Rings or almost anything by Pixar.

What’s the last recording you purchased? CD or download? A bunch of the most recent Philadelphia Orchestra CDs to give as gifts to family. Yannick is always very gracious and signs them for me!

When was the first time you heard The Philadelphia Orchestra? When I was a kid, I used to listen to my dad’s LPs and he had several Philadelphia Orchestra records.

Other than Verizon Hall, where is your favorite place to perform? Either the historic Musikverein in Vienna or Suntory Hall in Tokyo. Oh, and definitely Carnegie Hall!
