The Philadelphia Orchestra Brings Music Home for the Holidays

Posted on November 19, 2020

Festive highlights include favorites from The Nutcracker

and an Our City, Your Orchestra performance at Project HOME

(Philadelphia, November 19, 2020)—This holiday season, The Philadelphia Orchestra presents a festive array of musical treats for at-home viewing. Our City, Your Orchestra, a series of FREE online concerts performed by small ensembles and recorded without audiences at Black-owned businesses and iconic cultural locations throughout the region, continues with a Thanksgiving-themed performance at Project HOME, available beginning November 23, 2020, at 7:00 PM ET at www.philorch.org/our-city-your-orchestra and www.facebook.com/philorch. In addition, premiering December 17, 2020, at 8:00 PM ET, and available for streaming until December 20, 2020, at 11:00 PM ET, the Orchestra will present Favorites from The Nutcracker Family Concert. Produced in partnership with WHYY Public Media, this special presentation features Assistant Conductor Erina Yashima leading selections from Tchaikovsky’s timeless ballet with celebrated storyteller Charlotte Blake Alston as narrator and students from the Rock School for Dance Education. The concert also includes the “Crackle Waltz” from Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel and a holiday sing-along with vocalist Patrice Hawthorne, who previously appeared in the Orchestra’s Our City, Your Orchestra program at Historic Belmont Mansion/Underground Railroad Museum. Tickets for the Favorites from The Nutcracker Family Concert can be purchased for $15 at www.philorch.org.

Juliette Kang (first associate concertmaster), Nathaniel West (acting assistant principal bass), Samuel Caviezel (associate principal clarinet), Angela Anderson Smith (bassoon), and Jeffrey Lang (associate principal horn) perform “We Gather Together,” Copland’s “At the River,” and more in celebration of Thanksgiving for the Our City, Your Orchestra performance at Project HOME, a Philadelphia non-profit organization empowering individuals to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness through affordable housing, employment, health care, and education. The program also features interviews with Project HOME President and Executive Director Sister Mary Scullion, Senior Sales Associate at HOME Spun Resale Boutique and Project HOME resident David Brown, and Vice President of Health Services Monica Medina McCurdy. Each interview will highlight the importance of Project HOME’s mission, particularly during these unprecedented times and this holiday season.

Just in time for the holidays: Surprise friends and family with the gift of music with new Philadelphia Orchestra gift certificates! The Orchestra will offer a limited promotion starting on November 28, 2020, during which gift certificate buyers will receive a promo code for a free holiday performance on the Digital Stage.
